Execute from procedural memory without step-by-step monitoring
Trust the automatic version of your skill and resist the urge to supervise each movement.
Why it works
Expert skills are stored as proceduralized "chunks" in long-term memory that run as unified subroutines — not as explicit step-by-step instructions. When pressure triggers self-monitoring, the brain reinverts this chunked execution into step-by-step supervision, which is slower, less coordinated, and error-prone. The cure is not better supervision but less supervision: committing to the automated subroutine and resisting the urge to insert explicit checkpoints.
How to do it
- Before execution, consciously recall a recent time you performed the skill automatically without thinking — anchor your intention to that version of yourself.
- During execution, resist checking individual steps; commit to the full movement as a single unit.
- Use a holistic cue ("smooth," "flow," "automatic") rather than a step-by-step list.
- After execution, evaluate the output rather than the process — this reinforces outcome-focus without inviting monitoring during the next repetition.
Evidence
Chunking theory of motor expertise (Fitts & Posner; Anderson) and Beilock’s explicit monitoring research converge on the same prediction: expert performance depends on not interrupting the proceduralized subroutine. Multiple experiments confirm that forcing experts to verbalize mechanics disrupts their performance more than novices’. (observational)
The chunking trust principle applies to well-automated skills only. For skills still in acquisition, explicit procedural monitoring is necessary and appropriate.

Common mistake
Trusting the autopilot but then second-guessing it mid-execution — the interruption of the chunk is what causes the error, not the skill itself. Once committed, complete the movement.
