Prioritize protecting primary resources above pursuing secondary ones
When under threat, guard your most foundational resources first — health, key relationships, income — even at the cost of secondary gains.
Why it works
COR theory predicts that not all resources are equal in their downstream impact. Primary resources — those that enable the functioning or acquisition of other resources — carry disproportionate leverage. Health enables work; work enables income; stable relationships buffer stress across domains; self-efficacy determines how effectively other resources are deployed. When resources are threatened, the rational protective investment is in primary resources first, because their loss compromises the whole resource system, not just one part.
How to do it
- Map your resource hierarchy: which resources, if lost, would most impair your ability to maintain or rebuild others?
- In any resource trade-off decision ("should I sacrifice sleep to get more done?"), explicitly name which resources are being traded and which is primary.
- Build non-negotiable minimums for your primary resources: the amount of sleep, quality of key relationships, financial floor, and health practices below which you will not go regardless of competing demands.
- When demands exceed resource supply, cut secondary activities before cutting primary resource maintenance.
Evidence
COR theory identifies resource centrality as a key factor in loss impact; empirical work consistently shows health, social support, and self-efficacy as highest-impact resources across diverse stressor types. Hobfoll’s 2002 adaptation review and the 2018 organizational review together document that these central resources carry disproportionate downstream leverage, supporting the logic of guarding primary resources first.
