Switch to a new variation before mastering the current one
Move to a different variation or task before you feel fully comfortable — the premature switch is what drives deeper encoding.
Why it works
When practice is blocked, the motor or cognitive program for a skill can be retrieved and executed from a short-term buffer on successive repetitions — no real reconstruction is needed. When practice is varied, the buffer is cleared between variations, forcing the learner to reconstruct the program each time from long-term memory. This reconstruction is the mechanism that strengthens the long-term representation. The discomfort of switching before mastery is precisely the signal that reconstruction is occurring.
How to do it
- For any skill you’re practicing, identify 2–4 variations (different distances, contexts, conditions, or problem types).
- Set a short block (3–5 repetitions) for each variation, then rotate.
- Do not wait until one variation feels comfortable before introducing the next — the rotation is the point.
- Expect performance to feel worse than in pure blocked practice; track long-term retention separately.
Evidence
Shea and Morgan (1979) published the foundational contextual interference study in motor learning, showing that random (high interference) practice produced superior retention and transfer over blocked practice despite worse acquisition performance. The effect has been replicated in motor and cognitive domains. (rct)
The contextual interference effect is more consistent in adults and in moderate-complexity skills. For very early novices or very high-complexity skills, some initial blocked practice may be beneficial before introducing variability.
