Accepting passive purification: not trying to fix it
The essential move of the dark night is to stop trying to force a return to consolation.
Why it works
John’s central paradox is that the night is undone by the effort to end it. The practitioner’s natural response to desolation — pray harder, do more spiritual exercises, find the right technique to restore the feeling — is precisely what prolongs it. What John calls "passive" purification means the work is being done to the person rather than by them. The psychological parallel is the ACT observation that avoidance of difficult internal states increases their intensity and duration; willingness to remain with what is present, without fighting it, typically shortens distress.
How to do it
- When desolation is present, resist the impulse to consume more spiritual activity to escape it.
- Continue ordinary practice (prayer, community, duty) without expecting consolation from it.
- Treat the night as a season with its own integrity rather than a problem to solve.
- Find a spiritual director or trusted guide who will not rush you toward resolution.
Evidence
Acceptance and willingness to remain with aversive internal states — rather than avoidance — is well-supported in the ACT literature for reducing the duration and intensity of distress. Common mistake
Oscillating between intense spiritual effort to escape the night and complete withdrawal from practice — both are forms of avoidance. The instruction is continued, ordinary practice without the expectation of consolation.
