Add the difficulty of testing
Make yourself retrieve the answer instead of rereading it.
Why it works
Testing is a desirable difficulty because pulling information out of memory is harder than reading it back in — and that effortful retrieval is itself a powerful learning event, reinforcing the memory far more than restudying does. Rereading feels easier and more productive precisely because it skips the difficulty that produces the benefit.
How to do it
- After studying, close the material and try to recall it before checking.
- Use questions that force production, not recognition.
- Test before you feel ready; the effort of a near-miss is where the gain is.
Evidence
The testing effect is one of the most replicated findings in cognitive psychology: retrieval practice produces substantially better long-term retention than restudying, across many controlled experiments and meta-analyses. Rowland’s (2014) meta-analysis confirms the retrieval advantage holds across studies, while Karpicke & Roediger (2008) show it is the act of retrieval itself — not extra exposure — that drives the gain. Retrieval helps most when it is effortful but largely successful; if the material is far too hard, some study or hints are needed before testing pays off.
