Prioritize depth over breadth in social investment
Having five genuinely close friends is more protective of wellbeing than having fifty adequate ones.
Why it works
Social connection research consistently shows that it is the quality and felt closeness of relationships, not their number, that predicts health outcomes, longevity, and subjective wellbeing. Dunbar's framework explains why: the inner 5 layer represents the people the social brain is most elaborately tracking — the relationships with the most cognitive, emotional, and behavioral complexity. Dispersing that investment across fifty relationships reduces the depth of tracking, which reduces the intimacy, which reduces the protective effect.
How to do it
- Identify whether your current social investment is producing depth in a few relationships or breadth across many.
- If breadth is dominating, consciously reallocate time toward your inner-layer relationships for a defined period.
- Measure social satisfaction by the quality of your five closest relationships, not by how busy your social calendar is.
- Accept that a quieter but deeper social life is not a sign of social failure.
Evidence
The Harvard Study of Adult Development and other large longitudinal studies find relationship quality — not quantity — to be among the strongest predictors of health, happiness, and longevity. (observational)
Observational and correlational; the causal direction (quality relationships cause wellbeing vs. happier people attract quality relationships) is difficult to fully disentangle.
