Change behavior by adjusting the smallest action in the direction of your values — not by waiting until you feel ready.

Why it works

Motivation follows action more reliably than it precedes it. Waiting to feel motivated, ready, or unafraid before taking a values-aligned step means using the emotion as the gatekeeper — which hands control to the emotional state. A tiny tweak — the smallest possible step in the valued direction — breaks the waiting cycle, generates a moment of self-efficacy, and begins to accumulate evidence that the person you want to be is already showing up.

How to do it

  1. Identify the valued action and scale it to something you could do in the next 10 minutes.
  2. Do it while the discomfort is present — not because you feel ready, but because you have chosen the direction.
  3. Treat the completion as evidence: "I showed up, even when it was uncomfortable."
  4. Let the next tweak grow naturally from that evidence.

Evidence

The tiny-tweak approach aligns with behavioral activation research (action before motivation) and with the two-minute rule in habit research. Taking any action in the valued direction is more effective than planning for larger action that never starts. (mechanistic)

Tiny tweaks are a starting mechanism; they must eventually grow into sustained committed action for lasting change. The tweak is an on-ramp, not the destination.

Common mistake

Treating the tiny tweak as the finished goal — so "I texted to say sorry" substitutes for "I repair this relationship." The tweak is a step toward the value, not a proxy for it.
