Intrinsic motivation

Drive yourself toward goals for internal reasons rather than only external reward or fear.

Why it works

Motivation rooted in internal value (interest, meaning, mastery) is more durable than motivation driven by external pressure, which fades when the reward or threat is removed. Cultivating intrinsic motivation works because autonomous reasons for acting sustain effort and resilience through setbacks that would extinguish externally driven behavior.

How to do it

  1. Connect a goal to a value or interest that is genuinely yours.
  2. Notice when you are acting from "should" versus "want."
  3. Set goals that stretch toward mastery, not just outcomes.
  4. Track small progress to feed the internal sense of competence.

Evidence

The superiority of intrinsic and autonomous motivation for persistence is well supported by self-determination research, which long predates and is more rigorous than the EQ packaging. (rct)

This component leans on self-determination theory; Goleman’s grouping of it under "EQ" is a popularization rather than a research finding.

Common mistake

Stacking external incentives on top of something you already enjoy, which can crowd out the intrinsic interest and leave you less motivated once the incentive stops.
