Fade from worked examples to independent problems as competence grows
Start with fully solved examples, transition through completion problems, then shift to full independent problem-solving.
Why it works
At low expertise, the goal is to build schema by studying solution structure without also bearing the cognitive cost of search. As schema is acquired, the search cost drops because the schema constrains valid moves. At some point, the worked example provides less schema information than the problem-solving attempt does — and the latter also produces better transfer, because solving the problem requires schema use, not just schema exposure.
How to do it
- Begin with fully worked examples — learner reads and self-explains each step.
- Transition to completion problems — some steps given, some left for the learner to fill in.
- Remove scaffolding progressively until the learner solves problems without any given steps.
- Monitor for frustration spikes: too-rapid fading will cause the learner to resort to random guessing rather than schema application.
Evidence
The worked-example effect and its reversal are among the most replicated findings in cognitive load research. The transition from worked examples to problems has been directly studied, with evidence that a gradual fade outperforms either extreme alone. (rct)
Optimal fading speed is learner- and domain-specific; the studies typically use structured academic subjects where solution structure is well defined.

Common mistake
Maintaining fully worked examples long after the learner has formed the relevant schema, producing a "guidance redundancy" effect where processing the example actively interferes with consolidation.
