Locus of Control: Building a Sense of Agency

What is locus of control, and how do you become more internal?

Locus of control is whether you believe outcomes flow mainly from your own actions (internal) or from luck, fate, and powerful others (external). A more internal locus is associated in research with better health, achievement, and persistence — but it is learnable, and the goal is an accurate sense of agency, not the illusion that you control everything.

Julian Rotter introduced locus of control to describe a stable expectancy: do you experience your life as something you act on, or something that happens to you? It sits on a spectrum, it differs by domain, and it can shift with experience. Below are practices for building a more internal — and more accurate — sense of control, each with its mechanism and an honest read on the evidence.

Sort the situation into controllables and uncontrollables

Split any stressful situation into what you can influence and what you can’t, then act only on the first list.

Reframe outcomes toward effort and strategy

After a result, attribute it to actions you took (or can change) rather than to fixed luck or fate.

Build agency with deliberate small wins

Stack a series of small, completable actions to give yourself direct evidence that you can move outcomes.

Interrupt learned helplessness

Test the belief that "nothing works" by running one small experiment that could prove it wrong.

Map your locus of control by domain

Notice that you may feel agentic at work but helpless in health — and target the weak domains specifically.

Pre-commit to agentic responses with if-then plans

Decide in advance "if [setback], then [my action]" so adversity cues action instead of resignation.
