Why it works
Levine’s research found that after controlling for body composition, total daily energy expenditure varied enormously between similar individuals — primarily because of NEAT rather than BMR or exercise. This variation is mostly explained by occupational activity, personal movement habits, and environment rather than by metabolic rate or genetics. This means NEAT is one of the most modifiable energy expenditure variables — more so than exercise in most people.
How to do it
- Wear a step counter or activity tracker for 2 weeks to measure your baseline NEAT accurately.
- Compare your daily step average to the data for your age group (typical sedentary office worker: 3,000–5,000 steps).
- Identify the specific contexts where you are most sedentary and target those hours first.
- Increase your NEAT target by approximately 1,000 steps per week until you reach 8,000–10,000.
