Advanced noting — noting the act of noting itself
Turn attention to the process of noting itself, observing who is doing the labeling and whether the "noter" is also a mental event.
Why it works
This is the pointing-at-the-pointer move: noticing that the awareness that notes experiences is itself an observable phenomenon. This is called "bare awareness" or "witness consciousness" in various traditions and corresponds to the open-monitoring style in meditation science. It shifts from "I am noting thoughts" to "noting is happening" — a subtler form of de-identification that can dissolve the implicit sense of an unchanging observer separate from experience.
How to do it
- Only after basic noting is well-established: during a sit, briefly turn attention toward the process of noting itself.
- Ask silently: "Who is noting?" and observe what arises. Often another thought or sensation appears — note that.
- Allow this to be brief and light; it can easily become a conceptual rabbit hole. If it does, note "thinking" and return to basic noting.
- This is an exploration, not a destination. Many practitioners find basic noting more practically useful.
Evidence
The "observer" or "witness" inquiry is a cross-tradition advanced meditation instruction with no direct clinical evidence. It corresponds loosely to open-monitoring meditation, which has a small neuroscience literature showing different default-mode engagement than focused attention. (mechanistic)

Common mistake
Treating this as a philosophical inquiry to solve — "I’m looking for my true self." The practice is observational, not conceptual. Any answer that arises is just another mental event.
