Assign a deadline that is tighter than comfortable — not unrealistic, but just tight enough to prevent scope creep.
Why it works
Open-ended time creates a psychological permission to refine, reconsider, and elaborate. A tight deadline shifts the cognitive frame from "how good can I make this?" to "what does done look like?" — moving from open-ended exploration to constraint-satisfied closure. This is not about working faster; it is about reducing the activities that fill available time without improving output: perfectionist iteration, unnecessary research, and social distraction.
How to do it
- Before starting a task, estimate how long it would ideally take and subtract 20–30%.
- Set the timer and treat the deadline as real — do not automatically extend it when it expires.
- Evaluate the output honestly when time expires: if it is good enough, ship it; if genuinely incomplete, add one more bounded block.

Time pressure effects on performance are U-shaped: moderate pressure increases focus and reduces extraneous behavior; excessive pressure reduces quality and increases errors. Ariely & Wertenbroch found self-imposed deadlines helped procrastination but were less effective than external deadlines. Time pressure effects vary substantially by task type — creative and complex tasks are more sensitive to pressure than routine ones.
