Failure tolerance building
Normalize getting stuck — use stuck-ness as a diagnostic signal rather than a stop sign.
Why it works
Many learners abandon exploration prematurely because failure feels aversive and is interpreted as evidence of inability rather than as normal process. This avoidance destroys the exploration phase that productive failure requires. Building failure tolerance — reframing stuck-ness as information about the problem space rather than about the self — extends the exploration phase to the duration needed for the activation effects to occur.
How to do it
- When stuck, write: "I am stuck because I don’t know [specific thing] — and now I know exactly what to look for."
- Set a minimum exploration time before you are permitted to seek help: 10 minutes minimum, longer as tolerance grows.
- After a failure, name what the failure revealed about the problem structure — not about yourself.
- Track your "minutes stuck before giving up" across sessions as a metric of growing tolerance.

Common mistake
Treating early failure as evidence that the problem is "above your level" and immediately seeking a simpler version, which bypasses the difficulty that is the source of the learning.
