Remove or modify the cue rather than resist the response
Eliminating or changing the environmental stimulus is more effective than relying on willpower to resist it.
Why it works
Cue removal works on a different mechanism than self-control: instead of trying to suppress a response that has been elicited, it prevents the stimulus from being present to elicit it. This is more effective because it eliminates the competition between the automatic cued response and deliberate inhibition — a competition that automatic responses reliably win under stress, fatigue, or distraction.
How to do it
- Identify the cue driving the behavior you want to reduce.
- Remove, replace, or restructure the cue: hide the food, unplug the TV, use a different browser profile, sit in a different chair.
- If physical removal is impossible, introduce an interruption between cue and response: a lock screen message, an extra step, a physical barrier.
- The goal is to make the cue-to-behavior link require a deliberate choice to activate rather than firing automatically.
Evidence
Research comparing avoidance strategies (don’t encounter the cue) to resistance strategies (encounter the cue and resist) consistently favors avoidance in high-temptation contexts. Self-control research shows that people who rely less on willpower by avoiding situations outperform those who use willpower to resist. (observational)
Cue removal is not always possible (social cues, work-related triggers); this technique is most applicable when the cue is a physical object or avoidable context.

Common mistake
Modifying the cue’s location without removing it entirely, which reduces but doesn’t eliminate the triggering — you still encounter the cue, just with slightly more friction.
