Launch a new bundle at a natural fresh-start moment

Start a new bundle at a temporal landmark (Monday, new month, birthday) to leverage the fresh-start effect.

Why it works

Fresh-start research shows that temporal landmarks create psychological clean slates by separating the current self from the past self who failed to maintain the behavior. Beginning a new bundle at a fresh-start moment capitalizes on elevated motivation and intention without requiring that motivation to be sustained indefinitely — the bundle’s immediate reward structure takes over once the habit is underway.

How to do it

  1. Identify an upcoming temporal landmark (Monday, the first of the month, a birthday, a new season).
  2. Design the bundle in detail before the landmark and commit to starting it then — not before.
  3. Use the anticipation period to set up the enforcement structure for the want’s exclusivity.

Evidence

Milkman, Minson & Hershfield studied fresh-start effects on goal pursuit (the "fresh start effect") and found that people initiate behavior-change efforts more often at temporal landmarks. Combining this with bundle launches is a reasoned strategy rather than a separately tested design. (observational)

Fresh-start effects on initiation are well documented; their interaction with bundling specifically has not been experimentally isolated.

Common mistake

Waiting for a meaningful fresh start (New Year’s, a birthday) so long that months pass without starting — the nearest Monday works and confers most of the benefit.
