Write to yourself, not for an audience
Keep a private record of philosophical self-argument, not a performance or a diary.
Why it works
The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius was never meant to be read by others — it is philosophy as self-talk, aimed at convincing himself of principles he kept forgetting. Writing for no audience removes the editorial filter of impression management, allowing the more honest, less curated thinking that actually updates beliefs. Research on expressive writing suggests that processing difficult material in private writing produces different psychological effects than sharing it publicly.
How to do it
- Choose a medium that feels private: paper is traditional and removes the edit-undo reflex.
- Write in second person as Marcus did ("You are agitated — why?") or first person — but write to work something out, not to document it.
- Give yourself a philosophical problem: "What is actually at stake here?" "Which belief is driving this reaction?"
- Re-read weekly, not daily — daily re-reading feeds rumination; weekly re-reading reveals patterns.

Pennebaker’s expressive writing research found health and mood benefits from writing about difficult experiences, with effects appearing to depend on cognitive processing rather than emotional venting. (observational)
Pennebaker’s paradigm involves writing about trauma specifically; the Stoic journaling form is more philosophical than expressive, and the two mechanisms are related but distinct.
