Why it works
The Stoics used a specific mental reservation — "fate permitting" or "if nothing prevents me" — when making commitments, not as an excuse for half-hearted effort but as a psychological inoculation against devastation if things go wrong. It is the difference between "I will do this" (commitment to effort) and "this will happen" (attachment to outcome). The distinction prevents the collapse in motivation that follows when effort is fully invested in an outcome that doesn’t arrive.
How to do it
- Make your plans and commitments in full — then add the internal reservation: "with full effort, fate permitting."
- Don’t say this out loud to avoid sounding hedging or uncommitted; keep it as an internal attitudinal frame.
- When outcomes don’t arrive despite genuine effort, the reservation means you are not breaking a promise to yourself.
- Use this particularly for situations where the stakes are high and significant external factors are involved.

The reserve clause is a classical Stoic technique (the Greek is "hupexairesis"). Its psychological function maps onto what modern research calls detachment — maintaining full engagement while not staking well-being on the outcome.
