Protect daily progress on meaningful work
Guard at least one block of real forward movement every workday — this is the primary driver of motivation.
Why it works
Amabile and Kramer’s diary data showed that positive inner work life — the combination of emotions, motivation, and perceptions — was most reliably triggered by small, meaningful progress. The mechanism is twofold: progress provides direct evidence of competence (feeding intrinsic motivation) and generates positive affect that primes creative thinking the next day. Days without any progress triggered the strongest negative inner work life regardless of other conditions.
How to do it
- At the start of each day, identify one concrete step on meaningful work that you commit to completing.
- Protect that block from interruptions — treat it as a non-negotiable appointment.
- Make the step small enough to complete reliably, not aspirational.
- At end of day, record whether it happened and what moved.
Evidence
Based on analysis of 9,601 daily diary entries across 238 workers over multiple months. Progress on meaningful work was the most frequent trigger of positive days; setbacks were the most frequent trigger of negative ones. The effect was consistent across creativity levels and company contexts. (observational)
This is observational diary research — strong for capturing everyday patterns but not a controlled experiment. The "meaningful" qualifier matters: progress on work you don’t care about doesn’t produce the same effect.

Common mistake
Packing the day with meetings and reactive tasks and treating real work as something you’ll get to "after the urgent stuff" — which reliably produces the zero-progress days that damage motivation most.
