How IX Coach Remembers What Matters to You

5 min read

Most AI tools forget everything the moment you close the tab. IX Coach is built differently.

When you have a coaching conversation — whether it's a 5-minute check-in or a deep hour-long exploration — the system works behind the scenes to make sure the important things stick. Not the AI's responses. *Your* words. Your goals, your challenges, the exact language you used when something clicked.

Here's how it works, and what it means for your coaching experience.

---

During a Session: Your Words Come First

Every coaching session holds a window of recent exchanges in full detail — everything you and your coach said, word for word. When the conversation goes longer than that window, the system compresses older exchanges to make room.

But here's what's different:

Your words are preserved. The coach's responses are compressed first.

This is called [[concept:asymmetric-compression]], and it exists for a simple reason: your exact language matters more than the coach's. When you say "I keep avoiding the hard conversation with my manager," that phrase carries weight. It reveals how you think about the challenge. So the system keeps it — verbatim when possible — while summarizing the coach's earlier responses into brief notes.

The result: even in a long session, your coach still knows what *you* said, how *you* framed it, and what resonated with *you*.

How Memory Works Across Sessions

Think of it like how your own memory works — some things are vivid, some are condensed, and some become part of who you know a person to be.

During the conversation

Your recent exchanges are kept word-for-word. Nothing is summarized or compressed. This is the active conversation your coach is responding to right now. As the conversation gets longer, earlier exchanges are condensed into a rich summary — your goals, your challenges, what resonated, what didn't land. Your most important quotes are preserved verbatim. The coach's responses become brief action notes like "explored avoidance patterns" or "suggested journaling exercise." This is [[concept:tiered-memory]] at work.

After the conversation

When a session ends, the system extracts the most meaningful insights about you — your preferences, your patterns, your breakthroughs — and stores them as individual memories. Each one is typed: a goal, a challenge, a belief, a pattern, a verbatim quote, a moment of progress.

These memories persist. When you return next week or next month, your coach recalls them and weaves them into the conversation naturally. It might remember that you prefer direct coaching over gentle reflection, that you're working on a career transition, that last time you committed to having a difficult conversation — and you did it.

This is [[concept:cross-session-memory]]. It's why your second session feels different from your first — and your tenth session feels like talking to someone who genuinely knows you.

What Gets Remembered (and What Doesn't)

The memory system is specifically designed to capture what matters for *your* coaching journey:

Your goals and aspirations — both specific targets ("launch my business by June") and deeper longings ("feel more present with my kids") What resonated — approaches that clicked, metaphors that landed, moments of insight What didn't land — coaching styles or suggestions you pushed back on Your exact words — verbatim quotes that reveal your core motivations Your patterns — tendencies noticed across the conversation, like how you approach decisions or what you tend to avoid Your context — specific situations, relationships, and timelines you mentioned Your progress — growth and breakthroughs the system noticed over time

What *doesn't* get stored: the coach's strategies, generic methodology, or anything the coach said that didn't connect with you. The memory is about *you*, not about the AI.

What's Coming Next

We're actively building deeper continuity:

Memory transparency — We're working on ways for you to see what your coach remembers about you, correct anything that feels off, and actively shape what gets stored. Your memories, your control.

Richer cross-session threading — So your coach can reference specific moments from past sessions more naturally. "Last Tuesday you mentioned feeling stuck on the presentation — how did that go?"

The Philosophy Behind It

The goal isn't a perfect transcript of everything you've ever said. It's a coach that remembers what matters — your words, your patterns, your progress — and uses that understanding to meet you exactly where you are.

Every time you open a session, you're not starting over. You're continuing.
