Why it works
How to do it
Clinical research links rigid dietary restraint and dichotomous thinking to disordered eating and the disinhibition (binge) that follows restriction. This is a genuine contraindication, stated honestly rather than glossed over. Herman and Mack (1975) demonstrated the counterintuitive core of this effect — restrained eaters ate MORE after a preload, not less — and Byrne et al. (2004) found dichotomous thinking predicts weight regain, showing the all-or-nothing frame itself can drive the rebound. (clinical)
Bright-line rules are powerful but not universally safe; for vulnerable individuals or eating contexts, flexibility and clinical guidance matter more.
