Commit to lucidity about your situation
Resist the comfort of illusion — see your situation clearly, even where it is difficult, and act from that clarity.
Why it works
Camus consistently prizes lucidity — clear-eyed awareness of one’s situation — over comforting illusions or ideological frameworks that paper over reality. The practice is brutal honesty with yourself about what is actually true about your life, without the softening stories that make it easier but less real. Psychologically, self-deception (motivated reasoning, denial) is associated with short-term comfort but longer-term cost; clarity is associated with better decision-making and more authentic action.
How to do it
- Choose one area of your life where you suspect you are maintaining a comfortable story rather than a clear-eyed view.
- Write what you actually see, stripped of the softening narrative.
- Sit with what the clearer view reveals.
- Act from that view — not punitively, but with the grounding that clarity provides.
Evidence
Motivated reasoning and self-deception research shows that people maintain biased views of themselves and their situations when accuracy would be aversive. Counteracting this — seeing more clearly — is associated with better decision outcomes. Camus’s lucidity is the philosophical demand for this. (observational)
Depressive realism research suggests that moderately depressed individuals are sometimes more accurate in self-assessment; lucidity as a goal must be pursued without tipping into self- attacking accuracy. Clarity and self-compassion are compatible.
Common mistake
Confusing lucidity with cynicism or self-criticism. Camus’s lucidity is about seeing clearly, not about concluding that everything is bad. The clear view can include what is good, beautiful, and worth committing to.
