Support the physiology of elevation through vagal tone practices

Build the physiological capacity for elevation through practices that strengthen vagal tone.

Why it works

Haidt identified vagal activation as a component of the elevation response — the warm-chest feeling is consistent with what Barbara Fredrickson calls "love" and what polyvagal theory associates with social engagement via the ventral vagal system. Practices that build vagal tone (slow diaphragmatic breathing, singing, cold exposure, social resonance) may increase the frequency and depth of elevation responses by raising the baseline capacity of the relevant physiological system.

How to do it

  1. Practice coherent breathing (inhale for 5 counts, exhale for 5 counts) for 10 minutes daily — this is among the most evidence-backed vagal tone exercises.
  2. Sing or hum daily, even briefly — vocalization activates the vagal nerve via the recurrent laryngeal branch.
  3. Prioritize moments of genuine social connection where you feel synchronized with another person — this activates co-regulation.
  4. Note whether elevation responses become more accessible with time.

Evidence

Vagal tone and its relationship to social engagement, positive emotion, and well-being is supported by Porges’ polyvagal theory and Fredrickson’s work on "love" as a micro-moment of social resonance. Elevation’s specific link to vagal activation is from Haidt’s research. (mechanistic)

The vagal link to elevation is real but the claim that vagal tone building directly increases elevation sensitivity is plausible inference, not tested directly.

Common mistake

Treating vagal practices as substitutes for exposure to moral beauty — the practices support the physiology, but elevation itself requires genuinely witnessing virtue.
