Write an if–then plan that protects your priority from interference
"If [competing demand/distraction appears], then I will [delegate/defer/decline] instead of abandoning my goal."
Why it works
Goal pursuit is threatened not only by temptations and obstacles but by competing goals. The shielding function of implementation intentions specifically protects active goal pursuit from being derailed by competing goal triggers — distracting emails, urgent-seeming but unimportant requests, social invitations during work time. The if–then pre-empts the competing goal before it can recruit attention.
How to do it
- Identify the most common way your primary goal gets displaced (phone interruption, a colleague’s request, email).
- Write: "If [interruption type] occurs during [goal time], I will [specific handling response — defer, delegate, schedule] and return to [goal]."
- Post the plan visibly at your workspace so the response is available without retrieval.
- Rate each planned-goal session afterward: was it interrupted? Did the plan work?
Evidence
Goal shielding through implementation intentions is theorized by Gollwitzer and has been studied in attention and goal priming research, showing that people with implementation intentions are more efficient at ignoring distracting information related to competing goals. (observational)
Goal shielding studies are primarily laboratory-based attention experiments; field evidence for protection from real-world competing demands is more limited.

Common mistake
Writing goal-protection plans that require willpower in the moment of interruption (deciding case by case whether to respond) rather than pre-deciding and executing automatically.
Practice this with IX Coach
IX Coach helps you identify which competing demands most frequently interrupt your primary goal sessions and builds if–then shielding plans that are specific enough to execute without decision.
