Why it works
Post-traumatic growth is a documented phenomenon: many people report increased appreciation for life, closer relationships, or changed priorities following devastating loss. Benefit finding is not toxic positivity — it does not require diminishing the suffering, only attending to both the loss and whatever has grown alongside it. The dual attention is more accurate and more psychologically sustaining than either pure grief or forced optimism.
How to do it
- After sufficient time has passed (not in the acute phase), ask: has anything shifted in you, or in your life, that has value?
- Write specifically — not "I appreciate life more" but "I now call my mother every week, something I never prioritised before."
- Hold the gain and the loss simultaneously: the gain does not cancel the loss; both are true.
- Share the growth privately or publicly only if it feels authentic — never perform growth for others’ comfort.
Evidence
Post-traumatic growth following bereavement is documented in observational research; benefit finding in loss is associated with better long-term adjustment in several studies. Benefit finding should not be forced in early acute grief. (observational)
Benefit finding that occurs naturally is associated with better outcomes; instructing people to find benefits, particularly early in grief, can feel invalidating and backfire. The timing and authenticity of benefit finding matters.

Common mistake
Treating benefit finding as a required outcome of grief — not everyone identifies growth from loss, and the absence of identifiable growth does not indicate a failed grief process.
