Write three pages longhand, every morning

Fill three notebook pages by hand before doing anything else — no editing, no re-reading.

Why it works

Handwriting is slower than typing, which keeps pace with the natural flow of uncensored thought and prevents the polishing instinct from activating. The fixed-length target (three pages) removes the decision about when to stop, freeing attention from meta-cognition. Doing it before other inputs means the content is genuinely internal rather than reactive.

How to do it

  1. Keep a dedicated notebook and pen beside your bed or coffee station.
  2. Begin writing the moment you sit down — date the page, then start with whatever thought is present.
  3. Write without lifting the pen; if nothing comes, write "nothing comes" until something does.
  4. Stop at the bottom of the third page regardless of where the thought is going.
  5. Do not re-read until at least eight weeks in, if at all.

Evidence

The practice is advocated anecdotally by a large community of practitioners. Expressive writing research (Pennebaker) supports the general principle that externalising thoughts reduces rumination and can improve mood and cognitive clarity, though that research uses shorter, structured sessions rather than Cameron’s open-ended format. Pennebaker’s expressive-writing findings apply to structured trauma-focused writing; direct RCT evidence for morning pages as Cameron defines them does not exist.
