Practice deliberate curation awareness — remind yourself of what you are not seeing

When you notice comparison, recall explicitly that you are seeing a highlight reel, not a life.

Why it works

The comparison mechanism is automatic — the cognitive evaluation fires before conscious mediation. Cognitive reappraisal — deliberately reconstructing the framing of the comparison target — can interrupt the automatic self-deflating inference. Reminding yourself of the unseen content (bad days, editing, financial pressures behind the display) does not require cynicism; it restores epistemic accuracy to a process that has been systematically distorted.

How to do it

  1. When you notice a comparison thought ("their life looks perfect"), pause and explicitly name it: "This is a curated selection."
  2. Ask: "What am I not seeing?" — generate at least two plausible hidden costs or ordinary moments behind the post.
  3. Do not dismiss the achievement or the person; just rebalance the information.
  4. Notice how the affect changes after the reappraisal.

Evidence

Cognitive reappraisal has strong RCT evidence as an emotion regulation strategy, with consistent effects on reducing negative affect in response to stimuli. Applied to social media comparison, curation-awareness interventions show reduced comparison effects in experimental studies. (rct)

Common mistake
