When a situation ends other than intended, acknowledge it completely and close it: "It was. I acted. It is done."
Why it works
The reserve clause requires not just adding a mental contingency before action but genuinely closing situations after them. Marcus Aurelius’s Meditations models a practice of complete acknowledgment — "this happened, I responded, it is over" — that prevents the rumination loop that usually follows disappointing outcomes. The completion is not forced positivity but full acknowledgment followed by deliberate release.
How to do it
- When a significant action produces an unwanted result, write three sentences: "I intended X. I did Y. The outcome was Z."
- Add: "This is complete. What is mine to do now is the next action, not the correction of the last."
- Sit with that for three minutes — resist the impulse to immediately revise, retry, or regret.
- Then identify the next action and begin.
Evidence
Rumination — repetitive negative thinking about past events — is strongly associated with depression and anxiety; closure practices (cognitive completion, Zeigarnik-effect resolution) are consistent with reducing rumination. (mechanistic)
Rumination research supports the costs of not closing; deliberate completion as a practice is mechanistically grounded but not independently trialed in this exact form.

Common mistake
