Build the child’s inner wealth narrative over time
Consistently reflect back who the child is becoming, not just what they’re doing.
Why it works
NHA’s end goal is a child with a robust positive self-concept — what Glasser calls "inner wealth" — that is strong enough to sustain appropriate behavior even without adult recognition. The mechanism is identity consolidation: repeated experiences of having one’s positive qualities named and witnessed by a significant adult become part of the child’s stable self-narrative. A child who knows themselves as patient, creative, or persistent is less likely to behave in ways that contradict that story.
How to do it
- Keep a running list of the strengths and qualities you have named for your child across weeks.
- Periodically summarize these back: "Over the past few weeks I’ve seen you be generous, patient, and brave — those are really who you are."
- Use the narrative during difficult moments: "I know this is hard, and I also know you are someone who handles hard things."
- Invite the child to add to the narrative: "What do you think you’ve gotten better at lately?"
Evidence
Self-concept clarity and positive self-narrative are associated with better behavioral regulation and resilience; the practice of building this through repeated parental reflection is theoretically grounded in self-perception and social learning theory. (mechanistic)
The long-term inner-wealth narrative as a distinct NHA component has not been separately tested; the supporting mechanism is inferred from self-concept and identity research rather than directly trialed.
Common mistake
Treating the inner-wealth narrative as a one-time pep talk rather than a long-term, evidence-based account — the child needs to hear their qualities named across many instances before it becomes their own story.
