Why it works

How to do it

Active listening research finds that genuine attentiveness (vs. listening while formulating a response) improves both information recall and relationship quality. The beginner’s-mind framing is a contemplative delivery of the same skill. Weger and colleagues’ experiment on initial interactions found that active-listening responses left conversation partners feeling more understood than either simple acknowledgment or advice, giving the effect a controlled empirical anchor. (observational)

Active listening is studied primarily in therapeutic and organizational contexts; the Zen framing adds a motivation structure (curiosity) but is not independently trialed.
