Why it works
How to do it
Small controlled studies report that mild dehydration (~1–2% body mass) is associated with measurable but small decrements in attention, working memory, and mood, and with increased perceived task difficulty, mostly in samples of young healthy adults. (observational)
Samples are small, hydration is very hard to blind (participants generally know whether they have been drinking), findings come mostly from young healthy adults, and effect sizes are modest. These are useful nudges, not dramatic performance levers, and the size of the effect should not be overstated.
