Why it works
How to do it
Targeted remediation of specific knowledge gaps outperforms general restudy in educational and expertise research. The boundary-identification practice makes the targeting that deliberate practice requires. Chi et al. (1994) showed that prompting learners to generate self-explanations surfaces exactly these local gaps and produces better understanding than passive study, and Rozenblit and Keil (2002) located the IOED collapse at a specific mechanistic step rather than as diffuse weakness. (mechanistic)
Knowledge-boundary mapping is a practitioner technique; its effectiveness compared to other diagnostic approaches is not directly tested as an independent protocol.

IX Coach
