Why it works

How to do it

Question-driven reading is supported by the generation effect and by depth-of-processing research. The SQ3R method (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review), developed from early educational psychology research, embeds question generation as its primary activation step. Dunlosky et al. (2013) rated elaborative interrogation (a close cousin) as high-utility. Pressley et al. (1987) showed that precise, "why"-oriented elaboration drives better retention than imprecise elaboration, sharpening why specific questions outperform broad ones. (observational)

The benefit depends on the quality of the questions: surface questions ("what are the main points?") produce shallower processing than specific conceptual questions ("why does this mechanism work?").
