Why it works

Premature advice answers a problem the speaker hasn’t finished defining and implicitly says "your feeling is a problem to dispose of." Holding the advice keeps the speaker exploring, which often surfaces the real issue — and people frequently find their own solution once they feel understood, making the advice unnecessary.

How to do it

  1. Assume the first thing said isn’t the whole thing; let them keep unpacking.
  2. Ask "Do you want me to just listen, or are you looking for ideas?" before offering any.
  3. Hold solutions until they’ve felt heard, even when the fix seems obvious to you.
