Experiencing the self as a process, not a thing

In meditation, observe the stream of experience directly and notice that "I" is a label for the stream, not a separate observer of it.

Why it works

The ordinary sense of being a witness separate from experience depends on the implicit model that there is an "I" behind the thoughts watching them. Direct observation reveals that the watcher is itself another arising mental event — awareness does not have a fixed owner. This insight (called "the witness is seen through" in some traditions) is accompanied by a sense of openness and reduced identification with specific thoughts and states.

How to do it

  1. Sit in meditation and notice the flow of sensory experience, thoughts, and feelings without labelling anything as "mine."
  2. When the sense of "I am watching this" arises, turn attention on the watcher: "Who is this watcher? Is it an arising event too?"
  3. Allow the recursive inquiry to dissolve rather than force an answer.
  4. Stay present with the open, slightly vertiginous quality of not finding a fixed watcher.

Evidence

Neuroscientific models of self as a predictive inference rather than a fixed neural structure align with this experiential investigation. The default mode network, associated with self-referential processing, shows reduced activity in experienced meditators, consistent with loosened self-concept maintenance. (mechanistic)

Common mistake
