Anicca (impermanence) is the first of the three marks of existence in Buddhism: all conditioned phenomena arise and pass. Its practical value is not consolation — "this too shall pass" — but precision: seeing impermanence directly in experience (not just as a concept) dissolves the misperception that generates clinging and aversion. Evidence for impermanence practice is primarily mechanistic and contemplative-clinical.

Most people accept impermanence as a concept. The Buddhist insight is that conceptual agreement and direct perception are completely different things: we all know "nothing lasts," yet we act as though our pleasures, our identities, and our losses are permanent. Anicca practice closes that gap by training direct perception of change at increasingly fine-grained levels — sensations, thoughts, emotions, self-concepts.
