Discover high-quality analogue leisure during the break
The break creates space — the key is what fills it, not the absence of screens.
Why it works
Newport argues that digital declutter fails long-term when it is purely subtractive: remove apps, experience boredom, reinstall apps. The cognitive restlessness that drives compulsive phone checking is partly genuine — a need for stimulation, connection, and recreation. The break is most valuable as an opportunity to discover or re-discover high-quality analogue alternatives that genuinely meet those needs rather than mimicking the variable-reward structure.
How to do it
- In the first week of the break, deliberately try three analogue activities you have not done recently: physical craft, long walks, instrument, sport, letter-writing.
- Track which activities produce genuine satisfaction versus which feel like a poor substitute.
- Identify one that you want to continue regardless of whether you reinstall digital technologies.
- Schedule it into your calendar as a recurring commitment before the break ends.
