Remove all optional technologies for exactly 30 days — not a "digital diet" but a complete break to reset your relationship with them.
Why it works
Thirty days is long enough for the initial withdrawal discomfort to pass and for the mental space freed by the removed technologies to begin filling with other activities. Newport argues that a shorter break (a weekend, a week) does not produce the attitude shift because you are simply waiting it out — the 30-day duration forces the question "what do I actually do with this time?" to become real.
How to do it
- Remove or disable all optional technologies you identified — delete apps from your phone; log out of websites on desktop.
- Do not replace them with equivalent alternatives ("I’ll use Twitter but only on desktop").
- Tell the people who might try to reach you through these channels that you are unavailable there for 30 days.
- Keep a daily note of what you notice during the break — boredom, relief, urges, discoveries.
Evidence
Studies on social media breaks find reductions in anxiety and increases in life satisfaction over periods of one week to several months. A one-week break from Facebook (an RCT) showed significant wellbeing improvements. Newport argues for 30 days as the threshold for a full reset, but the dose is not experimentally calibrated. Common mistake
