What is the perennial philosophy and how can it guide a meaningful life?

The perennial philosophy, synthesized by Aldous Huxley from mystic and contemplative traditions across cultures, identifies a common inner core: a divine or ultimate ground underlying all existence, knowable through direct experience; an inner nature in humans capable of that knowing; and an ethics of love and compassion as the natural expression of that realization. It is not a scientific theory but a philosophical synthesis — its practices draw on contemplative traditions whose psychological effects have increasing observational and some experimental support.

In 1945, Aldous Huxley published The Perennial Philosophy — a survey of mystical literature from Christian, Sufi, Hindu, Buddhist, Taoist, and Indigenous traditions, arguing they all pointed to the same fundamental truths. He wasn’t claiming they are identical in doctrine, but that beneath doctrinal differences lies a common practical core: direct inner knowing, the dissolution of the isolated self, and the ethical consequence of realizing connection to others.
