Practice loosening identification with the ego-self
Train the capacity to observe your thoughts, feelings, and roles without completely being them.
Why it works
A convergent insight across perennial traditions is that the suffering produced by the isolated self is partly constituted by rigid identification with it: "I am my thoughts, my status, my body." Loosening this identification — through meditation, contemplative inquiry, or other practices — reduces the reactivity that comes from treating every challenge to self-image as an existential threat. Modern research on mindfulness confirms that self-referential processing decreases in experienced meditators, correlated with reduced rumination and anxiety.
How to do it
- Sit quietly for ten minutes. When a thought or feeling arises, practice noting: "There is thinking" or "There is anxious feeling" rather than "I think" or "I am anxious."
- Notice the observer — the awareness that can notice thoughts without being swept into them.
- Extend this into daily life: when you feel strong identification with a role ("I am a failure," "I am right"), pause and ask: "Who is aware of this thought?"
- Practice regularly; the capacity builds incrementally.
Evidence
Mindfulness meditation research shows decreased default mode network activity (self-referential processing) in experienced practitioners, with associated reductions in depression and anxiety. The perennial framing interprets this as ego-loosening. (observational)
The neuroscience supports reduced self-referential processing; whether this constitutes the deeper "ego dissolution" claimed by traditions is a philosophical interpretation of the data.

Common mistake
Treating ego-loosening as ego-destruction or passivity — the goal is a more fluid, less defended relationship with self, not the elimination of functioning personhood.
