Pu (朴, "uncarved block") is a central image in Laozi’s Tao Te Ching representing a state of original simplicity — potential uncluttered by excess conditioning, opinion, and accumulated complexity. As a practice, pu means deliberately returning to essentials: stripping away unnecessary complexity in decisions, possessions, commitments, and inner speech to restore natural responsiveness.
In the Tao Te Ching, Laozi returns repeatedly to the image of pu — the uncarved block of wood that contains all possible forms precisely because it has not yet been shaped into any particular one. The accumulated carving of a life — habits, opinions, self-concepts, commitments, obligations — can become a kind of clutter that prevents flexible, responsive action.
