Why it works

How to do it

Slovic (2007) documented the “collapse of compassion” — that identifiable, single victims generate more giving than multiple statistical victims — and argued this is a direct effect of the affect heuristic. The same work reports the counter-intuitive finding that giving to one named child fell once a second child was added, evidence that compassion tracks vivid affect rather than the number of lives at stake. The identified-victim effect is well-replicated in charitable giving and resource allocation research. (observational)

Responding more to identified individuals may sometimes be rational (they are the proximate case) — the correction is for allocating disproportionately to vivid over statistical cases of equal severity.
