Why it works

How to do it

Interoception research shows emotions have consistent bodily signatures, and body-based awareness practices are associated with improved regulation. Nummenmaa and colleagues (2014) mapped culturally consistent bodily topographies for distinct emotions, evidence that a feeling reliably shows up somewhere in the body you can name. Combining a verbal label with somatic awareness is a plausible, low-risk extension of affect labeling. (mechanistic)

The specific add-on of body-locating to labeling is more mechanistically reasoned than directly tested as a standalone tactic.
