Update your view out loud when the evidence warrants it
Say explicitly when you’ve shifted — this is what good reasoning looks like, not weakness.
Why it works
Social norms around "looking consistent" suppress visible updating even when someone has privately reconsidered. Publicly naming an update ("that’s a point I hadn’t weighed — I think I was partly wrong") changes the conversational norm and signals that the goal is truth rather than victory, which invites the other party to do the same.
How to do it
- Name the specific claim you’ve updated on and why: "I thought X, but the point about Y shifts that."
- Resist the urge to immediately add a "but…" that takes back the concession.
- Notice when the update is partial, and say that too — full capitulation is not the goal.
