Ask what each earlier self gave you, and what you dropped

Walk back through the people you have been and list, for each, one capacity you kept and one you left behind.

Pourquoi ça marche

In Wilber’s account, each earlier structure “remains in existence” after it is outgrown and has to be integrated into the new self rather than left behind. Esbjörn-Hargens describes the same pattern as holarchy: each level goes beyond the limits of the previous one but includes its essential aspects. A deliberate review of earlier selves turns that claim into something you can check against your own life — where you kept the capacity and where you threw it out along with the identity.

Comment faire

  1. Write down four or five earlier versions of yourself by age or chapter — the kid, the teenager, the student, the early-career self.
  2. For each, write one thing that version could do well: play without purpose, trust easily, believe fiercely, stay up all night for a friend.
  3. Mark each capacity K if you still have access to it today and L if you left it behind when you left that chapter.
  4. For each L, ask: did I outgrow the way I used it, or did I throw the capacity out too?
  5. Choose one L to look at more closely this month; leave the rest on the page.

Données probantes

The idea that earlier structures persist and must be integrated comes from Wilber’s 1984 paper on the developmental spectrum and from Esbjörn-Hargens’s overview of integral theory, which defines holarchy as transcending the limits of earlier levels while including their essential aspects. Combs’s 2013 handbook chapter on Wilber’s contribution to transpersonal psychology is titled “Transcend and Include”. The review exercise is a reflective application of that principle, not a tested intervention. (mechanistic)

This is a philosophical framework, not an empirical finding. Some things people leave behind were genuinely harmful, and nothing here says every earlier capacity should be reclaimed.

Turning the review into nostalgia for who you were. The question is not whether that chapter was better, but whether a specific capacity from it got thrown out with the identity it was attached to.
