Notice your defensiveness before you act on feedback

When feedback stings, name the defensive reaction first, then sort out what the feedback actually says.

Perché funziona

Lectica lists openness to feedback, awareness of your own defensiveness, and feedback-seeking skills among the practices that build the skill of seeking and working with feedback. On the model’s logic, feedback is what lets the next pass correct the last, so a reaction that blocks feedback stops that correction. This is the developers’ reasoning; no test of it was found.

Come farlo

  1. When feedback arrives, notice your first physical or emotional reaction and name it in a word.
  2. Repeat back what the person said, in your own words, before you answer.
  3. Write down the one point you think is accurate and the one you think is not.
  4. Ask one follow-up question about the point you think is accurate.

Prove scientifiche

The feedback practices are listed on Lectica’s web page as skills the model aims to build. The page does not report outcome data on how people respond to feedback. (anecdotal)

The sources list these as skills to build. They do not test whether the practices change how people respond to feedback.
