Why it works
Memory traces for a new learning experience are most accessible and modifiable in the period immediately after encoding — the reconsolidation window. Filling gaps within 24 hours captures memory while it is still fresh and allows you to clarify content before the forgetting curve steepens significantly (Ebbinghaus documented rapid initial forgetting in the first 24–48 hours after learning). After 24 hours, gaps that could have been filled from fresh memory often cannot be reconstructed at all.
How to do it
- Set a calendar reminder for the evening of each note-taking session.
- During the gap-fill session (15–20 minutes), re-read the main column and mark everything unclear.
- For each unclear item: either clarify from memory, add a question mark for follow-up, or look it up.
- This is also the moment to begin the cue column — your memory of the session context makes better questions.
Evidence
Ebbinghaus’s forgetting curve — steep initial forgetting followed by a slower decline — is among the most replicated findings in memory psychology. The 24-hour gap-fill practice directly applies this by intervening at the steepest point on the curve. (observational)
