Run the full WOOP sequence — not just parts of it

WOOP works as a sequence; running only the wish and outcome steps (pure positive visualization) is not WOOP and may be counterproductive.

Why it works

Each step in WOOP activates a different psychological process: the wish establishes a valued goal; the outcome visualization creates emotional investment; the obstacle creates motivational tension by confronting reality; the plan converts tension into an automatic behavioral response. Skipping steps interrupts the chain at the mechanism that depends on the previous step. Oettingen’s research consistently finds that the full sequence outperforms any subset, and that incomplete sequences (especially stopping after the outcome) can reduce goal-directed effort relative to no exercise.

How to do it

  1. Set aside 10–15 minutes with paper and no interruptions.
  2. Step 1 (Wish): Write one specific, meaningful, feasible wish.
  3. Step 2 (Outcome): Close your eyes for 2–3 minutes and imagine the best outcome. Write one capturing sentence.
  4. Step 3 (Obstacle): Ask "What is inside me most likely to block this?" Write one honest sentence.
  5. Step 4 (Plan): Write the if-then plan connecting the obstacle to a specific response.
  6. Read the full sequence back once before returning to work.

Evidence

Multiple RCTs have tested the full WOOP sequence versus components and versus positive visualization alone, consistently finding the full sequence superior for a range of goal types. (rct)

WOOP trials vary in follow-up length; most show effects at weeks to months. Long-term maintenance without repeated WOOP sessions is less documented.

Common mistake

Treating WOOP as a motivational visualization exercise rather than a structured behavior-change sequence — reading about WOOP and "kind of doing it in your head" is not sufficient for the mechanism to operate.

Practice this with IX Coach

IX Coach runs the full WOOP protocol in a structured conversation for each significant goal, ensuring each step is completed before moving to the next rather than allowing shortcutting.
