How does the RACI matrix clarify roles and prevent confusion on a project?
A RACI matrix assigns one of four roles — Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, Informed — to every person for every key decision or task in a project. Its main value is preventing the two most common team failures: work falling through the cracks because no one owns it, and decisions stalling because too many people feel they must approve them.
Most project breakdowns are not technical — they’re accountability breakdowns. Someone thought someone else was handling it. A decision needed five approvals when one would do. A stakeholder felt blindsided because they were never told. RACI is a simple four-letter discipline that makes roles explicit before the work begins. Here are the practices that make it actually work, not just a box checked in the project plan.
