Deliberate strategy selection
Choose the study method that matches the type of knowledge you are building, not the one that feels most comfortable.
Why it works
Most learners default to the strategy that feels easiest (re-reading, highlighting) rather than the strategy that is most effective for the target outcome. Deliberate strategy selection requires knowing that different goals need different strategies: retrieval practice for recall, elaborative interrogation for understanding, interleaving for discrimination. Strategy awareness transforms the learner from a consumer of material to an engineer of their own cognition.
How to do it
- Before studying, identify what type of learning the goal requires: recall? understanding? application? discrimination?
- Match strategy to type: recall → retrieval practice; understanding → self-explanation; application → practice problems; discrimination → interleaving.
- Apply the selected strategy actively and resist reverting to highlighting or re-reading under time pressure.
- Evaluate after the session whether the strategy served the goal.
Evidence
Dunlosky et al. (2013) rated ten learning techniques on utility across conditions: practice testing and distributed practice received "high utility," while re-reading and highlighting received "low utility" despite being the most common student strategies. (observational)
Research is done on specific techniques; the strategy-selection meta-skill — knowing which to use when — is harder to study directly and relies on the same metacognitive judgment the concept aims to build.

Common mistake
Using the same strategy regardless of the learning goal — often re-reading, which produces familiarity but not retention or understanding — because it feels like progress.
